What to Prepare Before Meeting an Interior Designer

Published 24 August 2026

A first meeting with an interior designer is far more useful when you walk in with a few things sorted, rather than just a vague sense that you “want it to look nice.”

A realistic budget range

Not an exact number — a range. Interior design decisions (furniture, materials, custom carpentry versus modular) change enormously depending on budget, and a designer working blind on this will either over-propose or under-deliver.

How you actually use each room

Not how you imagine using it — how you actually live. If the dining table is mostly used for homework and laptops, say so. If the living room needs to double as a guest bedroom twice a year, that changes the furniture and storage decisions from the start.

Reference images that show what you like — and don’t

Save images of spaces you’re drawn to, but also note what you specifically like about them: the material, the lighting, the layout, the colour. “I like this” is less useful to a designer than “I like how open this kitchen feels” or “I like this warm lighting in the evening.”

A timeline, even a rough one

Are you moving in three months or planning ahead for a project next year? Timeline affects material lead times, whether custom furniture is realistic, and how phased the work needs to be.

Any non-negotiables

Existing furniture you’re keeping, a room that must stay a certain way for practical reasons, a colour you actively dislike — flag these early so the design doesn’t have to be reworked around them later.

What you don’t need to prepare

You don’t need to know material names, have a Pinterest board with a hundred images, or have technical knowledge of layouts. That’s the designer’s job — your job is to be clear about how you live and what matters to you.
