Do they ask about the site before talking about design?

An architect who jumps straight to Pinterest-style inspiration without discussing your plot’s orientation or the local building bylaws is skipping a step that matters later.

How do they handle your budget?

A realistic firm will ask about your budget early and design within it, rather than presenting an aspirational design that gets stripped down later. Ask how they structure costs — design fees, visualization, documentation — separately from construction cost, so you know what you’re actually paying for at each stage.

Can they show you their actual process, not just finished photos?

Finished project photos tell you about taste. They don’t tell you how a firm handles the unglamorous middle of a project — technical drawings, site coordination, timeline management. Ask what a typical project timeline looks like and what’s expected from you as the client at each stage.

Who will you actually be working with?

Some firms hand a signed client over to a junior team member for day-to-day work. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as it’s clear upfront — ask who your main point of contact will be through the project.

What happens if something needs to change mid-project?

Sites and budgets rarely stay exactly as planned. A firm’s answer to “what happens if we need to change the layout after design development” tells you a lot about how transparent the relationship will be under pressure.
