How the Architectural Design Process Actually Works
Published 20 August 2026
Most people hiring an architect for the first time have a rough idea of what they want and very little idea of what happens next. Here is what the process typically involves, stage by stage.
1. Understanding the site and the brief
Before any drawing happens, an architect needs to understand three things: the site (orientation, size, soil, surrounding structures, local building regulations), the brief (how many rooms, what kind of spaces, budget range) and the people who will use the space (family size, routines, future plans). Skipping this stage is the single biggest cause of redesigns later.
2. Concept design
This is where the first sketches and layout options appear. The goal isn’t a finished design — it’s a spatial direction: where the entry sits, how rooms relate to each other, where light enters, and how the building responds to the plot. Expect two or three concept options rather than one fixed plan at this stage.
3. Design development
Once a concept is agreed, it gets developed into a proper floor plan with actual dimensions, structural logic, and material direction. This is also when 3D visualization is most useful — it turns a 2D plan into something you can actually picture yourself living in, and it’s much cheaper to change a wall in a 3D model than after the foundation is poured.
4. Technical documentation
The design is translated into construction-ready drawings — structural details, electrical and plumbing layouts, and specifications a contractor can actually build from. This stage is unglamorous but it’s what prevents costly surprises on site.
5. Execution support
Depending on the scope agreed, the architect may stay involved through construction — reviewing work against the drawings, resolving on-site queries, and coordinating with contractors so the built result matches the design intent.
What this means if you’re starting a project
If an architect skips straight to “concept” without asking about your site or how you actually live, that’s worth questioning. A good process front-loads understanding so the later stages — the expensive ones — go smoothly.
